Chapter 1 launches in Early Access — October 5, 2026
Mycopsychosys: Project Jupiter Guide

Story and timeline

Quick answer

Project Jupiter is a prequel — it follows Hugo's first days at the PCD, before the events of the Mycopsychosys visual novel. Either order works; playing the VN first adds context without spoiling the prequel.

Where Project Jupiter sits

Project Jupiter is a prequel: it follows Hugo as he joins the national Plague Control Department, chronologically before the events of the visual novel Mycopsychosys. Same world, same infection, same department — earlier people, earlier warning signs.

That ordering is officially stated ("happening chronologically before the first entry of the series"), which makes it an unusually friendly sequel-of-sorts: you can start here without having touched the VN.

The series has also picked up translations over time — French, Korean and Russian were community-driven additions to the VN — and seasonal events (a Halloween "Sporeween", Christmas outfits) came later as free updates.

The story timeline, in world

  • Project Jupiter (first, chronologically): Hugo's first days at the PCD. The department has been studying the infection "for a long time"; the sporestorm threat is part of everyday procedure.
  • Mycopsychosys (after): the VN's story, where the infection is no longer just a case file — the sporestorm and the people caught in it take the stage.

How tightly the two overlap in time isn't fully documented yet — expect references, callbacks and familiar faces rather than a clean handoff. The characters page follows who is confirmed in both.

Which order should you play?

Both orders work, and neither ruins the other. The real choice is about what you want first:

  • Visual novel first (the completist order): the Remastered edition is short (roughly one to two hours), cheap, and establishes the infection, the PCD and the cast. Playing it first makes every callback in Project Jupiter land.
  • Project Jupiter first (the live-release order): it is the prequel, so its story stands alone by design. Starting here means you experience the story in in-world chronological order — and you are in the conversation while the game is actually releasing.

If you only ever play one: the prequel is the bigger, newer game, but the VN is the one that is already finished. That trade is your call.

What carries between the two

  • The infection itself — the sporestorm and the condition behind the series name (explained here).
  • The PCD as an institution — its rules, filters and alarms are consistent across both, documented on the sporestorm page.
  • Faces — Hugo, Ray, Silvia and others appear across releases; see characters for who is confirmed where.
